MOMENT
"The moment is only as powerful as how you remember it."
After a couple of months of sleepless nights on a smoke damaged mattress in the burnt out remains of my home, I had an idea. This idea would become the genesis of this exhibition.
Three years ago, through a series of very unfortunate circumstances, I left my job and 4 days later the top floor of my home burnt down. I lost everything.
My camera equipment and entire back catalogue of photographs, eight years worth of photographic work was gone. Quite literally all I had where the clothes on my back. All around me was devastation. My idea was to use the last of my meagre savings to buy my first digital SLR camera. The plan was to stop and photograph anything and everything I encountered that I thought was beautiful.
Unexpectedly the more I went out looking for beautiful things to photograph - the more I found. Everywhere I looked I found beauty, even the streetlights shining through the leafless trees had a new ethereal allure. The photos you see on the walls today were taken in the period surrounding the fire. They are the little moments I encountered that made me stop, stare and get my camera out. They are the story of how I recovered from losing everything.
And proof that even in the darkest situations there can be a 'golden lining'.I no longer view the house fire as a negative thing, though I did for a very long time - now I remember it as a moment that challenged me to look at the world with different eyes.
