As a cyclist I had spent several years pedalling around the British countryside clicking away with my mobile and taking some astonishingly lovely landscapes. The time had come to grow up photographically and this journey is in a sense my coming of age. A good camera in an exotic world, where the people are the landscape and live in visual harmony with their surroundings, as seldom seen in the west.
Whether a game of chess on the pavement, a moment of contemplation at the bird market, net fishing in the Indian Ocean or a kickabout in the heart of a historic monument, transforming it into a noisy stadium that beats anything organised by an Olympic committee, the people are the landscape, the landscapes are the people.
ANDREW BOXER is an actor and a recent partner in Lock One Batik Gallery, who have been buying and selling the works of Indonesian Artists and craftspeople for more than 20 years.
